Steampunk Laptop

Steampunk Laptop

This is my heavily modified Steampunk Dell Mini 9 which I call the Net Libris.

Besides the casing mod, I’ve also added a touchscreen, an internal FM transmitter, in internal micro SD card reader with a 32GB sd card, upgraded battery, and an upgraded solid state harddrive (16GB).

Hope you like it!

  • 9″ Screen (1024 x 600)
  • 1.6ghz Atom Processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • 16GB SSD Drive
  • 32GB Internal SD Card
  • Wifi
  • 3G
  • Resistive Touchscreen
  • FM Transmitter
  • Upgraded battery.

  • Well I Feel Stupid

Got an email back from the seller and the solution is pretty simple.  The control board bends around and fits behind the screen! Should have thought of that to be honest but there wasn’t any instruction, and it was late, and anyway…

    Dismantling the Dell Mini

Ok, I’ve had to dismantle the majority of the Dell Mini 9 to fit the touchscreen though have hit a snag :(

The control board doesn’t fit in the lid!!!

The description on the ebay listing said it was compatible with all netbooks so have sent an email to the seller for advice.

So frustrating!  I want my touchscreen netbook!

Meanwhile, I hope you enjoy these pic of my disassembled netbook!

Touchscreen on the Dell Mini 9

Decided to add a touchscreen to my Dell Mini 9 :)  This will be my first hack so fingers crossed it goes well!

There are a few touchpanels from Hong Kong on ebay that are suitable.  Most of them are resistive single touch touchscreen that look pretty easy to install through a usb connection, though there is also a capacitive touchscreen (the kind used on smart phones) that supports multitouch.  It’s about £60 so a fair bit more expensive than the resistive screen but I think it will be worth it.  Looks like some skill with a soldering iron is needed but that won’t be a problem for me.

I have it ordered, and now waiting for it to arrive.
